Posts: 8 05/13/08 03:10 AM	Tags : None Hi Guys.. this is a thread about my other female piggy Noodle.. she is about 3 years and she stayed with my friends the night before last. When we got her back yesterday she was so bloated and gassy! Her stomach was really growling and sounded like it was just full of gas.. rumbling and sounding quite 'aggresive'. She also felt big and bloaty and was uncomfortable. My friend said she fed her lots of dandelion leaves from the garden. I think this is what caused it? Is is normal for pigs to get gas? Do they fart? :) Is it serious? She has had these 'rumbles' before. Sometimes you hear her from inside the house. Thanks so much guys!

Posts: 3512 05/13/08 10:29 AM Moderator	Bloat can be deadly. The big thing with bloat is, gas builds up in the intestines, and causes the whole gut to go into stasis. Basically, nothing is coming out - no gas, no poops. Bloat is an emergency situation and needs a trip to the vet ASAP. If she's gassy, but farting and pooping, this is good. I would keep an eye on her, and hopefully it will work through her system soon. So, yes, its normal that pigs fart. Her gassiness was most likely caused at eating a large quantity of something she wasn't used to (the dandelions). It's not necessarily the dandelions themselves that caused the problem, but any time you introduce a large quantity of new food to a guinea pig, you run the risk of upsetting their digestive tract. Different foods can cause gas. Broccoli can often cause it, along with cabbage. Its why you should only feed very small quantities to a pig, or avoid it altogether. Different pigs react differently to certain veggies. I know parsley will give my guys gas. If she often has a rumbly stomach, you may want to review what you're feeding her, to see if you can identify what's making her most gassy.

Posts: 24 05/20/08 04:01 AM	Just really watch her and make sure she's pooping. My guinea farts all the time and I found out it was because of the pellets I was feeding her, but she still pooped and didn't seem uncomfortable, so it might not be deadly.

Posts: 107 05/29/08 11:27 AM	My guinea pig loves broccoli and I give him a little piece every night with his dinner...he hasn't had any provblems that I'm aware of.. He's now 5 years old. From your comment it sounds like you wouldn't recommend it as a treat every night? He gets very particular and even if I make him a beautiful salad, if I don't give him exactly what he wants for dinner he cries.

Posts: 3512 05/29/08 12:16 PM Moderator	It really depends on the pig and the quantity and the food in question. Its kind of like people - some people are lactose intolerant, and others aren't. Some pigs can handle certain veggies better than others. Broccoli is on the "not good all-the-time" list, because in general, most pigs have difficulty digesting it. It usually causes gas. As you've discovered, a small piece every night is not a problem for your pig. Some of it is just trial and error - you see what works for you and your pigs. For example, Romaine is considered a "safe" every-day veggie. I had a pig that I had to stop giving it Romaine, entirely, because it was causing/aggravating bladder cystitis. It made her sick. Who knew?! So there are exceptions to the rules, for both good and bad veggies. My advice is based on my own experience and what I've witnessed with others on these boards. Bottom line, its just recommendations, not gospel truth. I am a firm believe in go-with-your-gut, and do what works. For you and your pig, it seems a small piece of broccoli works - go with it.

Posts: 3512 05/29/08 03:05 PM Moderator	Pigs will get rumbley tummies. They fart, too, although you have to be a good listener to hear it (usually). If you handle them on a regular basis, you can often feel it if they start getting gassy. I've had one pig that would get fatter on one side than the other, and you could feel the gas if you gave her a bit of a squeeze. Eclair was my gassy pig - you could hear her tummy rumble every so often from across the room! When gas begins to get critical, they will get hard - not as squishy as they usually are. Thumping their belly will sound really hollow. Usually the belly gets distended. The pig may cry, but you should clearly see they're uncomfortable - either puffing up, or acting listless. Not wanting to eat. When its bad, it will cause everything in their gut to stop moving - you'll get no poops out of them. Bloat is painful, and can be deadly.
