Re: Flaky White Ear & Generally Freaking Out (reply) Yeah, I know, right? Apparently you don't have to know anything to be an "expert!" The piggy was named Snickers. I'm not sure Snickers is a name I would have ever thought of myself, but he is black with brown swirls so it's pretty descriptive, and it ... |

Re: Flaky White Ear & Generally Freaking Out (reply) Wow. What an expert. A chinchilla lives about 20 years. Guinea pigs live 5-7 years. Kiln-dried pine is fine, which I believe is most packaged pine shavings. Its the oils and phenols that cause problems -- so airing it out before using it helps. I know ... |

Flaky White Ear & Generally Freaking Out (topic) Hi! I had a guinea pig a LONG time ago as a kid/teenager, and I've wanted another one since. Finally this week I saw an ad on Craigslist by a family that had bought one and decided they didn't want it, so I said I'd take him. At the handover they gave me ... |

Rescue/Fostering - pregnant two sows (topic) I've been fostering small animals for over 4 years now, and this is the first time I'm going to be taking care of babies; I'm so excited!!!! For this one, the two rescued sows are pregnant. I don't know how far along they are, and neither does the ... |

Re: My guinea pig is really sick... won't do anything!!!!! (reply) Oh, so young! if anything, that gives him more of a chance to recover if given proper treatment. But you still have to get him to a vet immediately. The longer you delay, the worse his chances are to recover. |

Re: My guinea pig is really sick... won't do anything!!!!! (reply) Thanxs a bunch for that. Ya I am not sure if this would change anything but Charlie is only a year old. I don't know if that has any relevence to his sickness but that is how old he is. Thanxs for all the help! I'll see about the vet. |

Re: My guinea pig is really sick... won't do anything!!!!! (reply) He needs to be seen by a vet immediately. He's obviously under respiratory duress. As traumatic as a vet visit may be, it doesn't sound like he'll make it long without some medical treatment. Could be his heart, or it could be an upper respiratory ... |

Update on Zhi Shu (reply) Just wanted to give a quick report on current situation. Zhi Shu is eating pellets again, eating anything we put in front of him. Still no clue what the problem was. Still intend to take him to a good cavy-knowledgable vet for a checkup asap. But right ... |

Re: Somethings not right with my pig's ears (reply) You're right that all bedding is somewhat dusty. I find aspen worse than others. Fleece, however, would be dust-free. His sneezing could be from the bedding, but it being carefresh, its likely not. (and, personally, I hate Carefresh -- gets too soggy too ... |

Re: Somethings not right with my pig's ears (reply) I got him around the end of May, so he's not that old (I got him from Petsmart, was already a few months old). He was fine up until August when it seemed to have first appeared. I use CareFresh bedding (the one that is suppost to have the least dust)... ... |

Re: Somethings not right with my pig's ears (reply) I am not terribly familiar with skin conditions. From what you describe, I would worry about a fungal infection, especially since it hasn't responded to moisturizers (especially the aloe). How long have you had this pig? How old is he? What kind of ... |

Somethings not right with my pig's ears (topic) I've noticed something going on for a while now. My pig's ear seems dry & flaky (almost like an ashy consistency to the skin in flakiness) on the back side of both his ears. It used to be just one, but now it's on the back of both of them. The ear that ... |

Re: Two questions (reply) 1. It can't hurt. If they came from a good home, its possible that they had been treated, or were mite free. But treating with pour-on ivermectin is pretty easy and inexpensive, so I'd go for it. 2. I've not heard of petromalt. So no, I'd say its not ... |

Two questions (topic) Hi-I am fairly new to guinea pig slavedom (very familiar with cat and bunny slavedom however) and I had a few questions. I have read pretty much every thread on this entire forum, so I'll try not to ask the same questions that someone else already has: ... |

Re: suspected URI and prohibited from seeing vet (new guinea pig owner) (reply) My 1 year old female guinea pig that I have had for 8 months now just developed ATI. At first her pee smelt really bad but since she was housed with my male guinea pig I didn't know who's pee it was or what was going on so I cleaned the bedding more and ... |

Re: New GP Mommy: My baby has the sniffles! (reply) Baytril can kill a pig's appetite - some pigs don't tolerate it well. You should contact the vet and tell him this. They may have to switch the antibiotic to something else. You can try giving her a pro-biotic (acidophilus or poo from a healthy pig). Be ... |

Re: New GP Mommy: My baby has the sniffles! (reply) So Dizzy's medical saga continues... Took her to another vet who, after doing what I considered a rather cursory exam, put Dizzy on Vibramycin (.4 CCs for 14 days) and Vitamin C drops (.5 CCs for 30 days). Dizzy finished her Vibramycin a couple of weeks ... |
