I adopted my two piggies from a pet store and I don't feel guilty. This is the only place I knew to purchase one. The pet store gave me the name of the
breeder that they received my pigs from. My piggies were brought to a vet to verify sex and they were females. The pet store did separate all piggies by sex,
there were none that were pregnant. I understand that you can probably get not what you're looking for but I am proud of my piggies and I am very grateful
to the pet store I purchased them from.
It may be different from state to state, city to city, country to country. I am not sure but I hope that all piggies can be rescued or adopted because they make amazing pets. |

You are extremely lucky to have a good experience with pet store pigs. I am glad that you decided to get pigs as pets because as you said they do make amazing
pets!! I am confused to as if you bought your pigs or they were adopted from the store?? Please dont get the two confused because I know many people that
assume they are adopting pigs and they are actually buying them. I dont mean to criticize you or anything but there is a difference between the two.
But none the less I say have fun with your pigs because they are truely the best pet!! |

Just for the record, in my case, when I was looking for a mate for Ginger the first time around, the closest place I could find to adopt one was over 200 miles
away. I called and called around to the vets in my area too. I just happened to luck up on Buffy and Fruit Loop, and then on Ringo. So just a thought in case
someone else wants another piggie or looking for thier first, check with the vets in your area too. In my *opinion* though the pet store is a last resort, but
you can look at it as your saving them too, since about 70-80% of pet store pigs end up in homes that are uninformed and see them as disposable pets like
hampsters or mice..
again this is just my (opinion*!! |

Henle15--cavymadness76263: At the pet store we did purchase our piggies but they also call it "adoption" I think that is where I or may cause some misunderstandings. Thanks for trying to clarify, no problems........... |

When looking for a pig, I considered the pet store, b/c after all, I feel that they need rescuing, too. However, I guess it's a conflict of interest, as I
don't want to support pet stores that carry GPs. Besides not sexing correctly and not knowing much about GPs, they give very minimal information to new pet
owners. Contrast that with the humane society where I got a pig last week -- they gave extensive medical history (our boar recently got neutered) as well as
info as to how to take good care of him. Anyway, I just feel for those GPs in pet stores who will be sold to bad homes.

I understand completely. I was actually in the process of adopting Jane and Eddie from a rescue agency when the woman who was abandoning them left them in
front of a pet store one morning. Apparently she didn't want to give any history on them (it turned out Jane was pregnant and she didn't want to admit
that's why she was giving them up). I eventually tracked down the pet store that had them after about a month, at this point the babies had been born. I
was so distraught to find out that the pet store had them in these tiny cages that weren't cleaned very frequently and they only gave them pellets and
water. I also found out that they were charging $22 for the baby that was left and giving the parents away for free w/ the purchase of a "large
enough" cage. They had no C&C cages only tall ferret houses and they were giving the parents for free b/c "no one wants to buy a older used
guinea pig". That's what the pet store owner told me. So, I marched in there with my travel cases ready, paid for all 3 of them, and brought them
home to a life of luxory and pure fun. I feel bad b/c I essentially "supported" the pet store by giving them money but I just couldn't walk out
of there and let those 3 pigs stay in those horrid conditions. It took about 2 weeks before they were comfortable with people (since they were used to being
poked and gauked at all day). Now they are the sweetest most loving critters in the world and my boyfriend and I love them so much. Sometimes I feel like
when they are looking directly in my eyes and squeeking at me that in a way they are saying "Thank you for giving me a new home".

Crazypiggie, kudos to you! Those piggies are so lucky to have been rescued from such horrid conditions. Normally I wouldn't condone supporting pet stores,
but in this case it was absolutely necessary. I applaud you for your dedication and wish you and all your piggies the very best future together!

Okay after reading your post, it seems I have done everything wrong so far and we have only had the pig since Saturday!
First off: We got him from a pet store. My sister got her daughter from there about 5 years ago and loves her piggy. 2nd the pet store gave us vita drops to put in the water. I honestly (sadley) didn't know that there was unwanted piggies out there I would have went RIGHT to that instead of the pet store. I am a true believer in saving unwanted animals and never (for some reason) even thought about small pets being unwanted (you always just hear about the cats and dogs). I feel TERRIBLE now about getting him from the pet store, but I would never give him up as then he will be yet another unwanted pet. So my question is this: Why do pet stores give people false information about animals, such as bedding, vita drops, etc? We got the carefresh bedding. They said this is the most absorbant. Another thing I am feeling bad about is that he is all alone (No litter mates, or whatever they are called). I feel bad for him so I take him out of his cage a lot to pet him and talk softly to him :) He hasn't made any noises yet. I am looking forward to the happy noises that I know they can make :) Oh..another thing my niece said was she was suprised how small he is. I told him he is only 2 months old. |

fleece covering the cage bottom? | #31 | ||
|
Mention of fleece makes me think also of pictures I have seen, it looks like blankets stretched over the bottom of the cage--I mean, how does that work in
contrast to the carefresh or something? Is this when you put several litter boxes out and encourage them to figure it out?

In regards to fleece, please read Aspen,
Not working, possibly fleece again, and add any questions about fleece as a bedding to that thread.

Hi there, I have 3 piggies in a large cage. I clean it once a week and have never spot cleaned. I put down loads of newspaper (they seem to enjoy peeing on
certain politicians' faces!!) and then a lot of bedding (a sort of pine shaving I think). If you don't cover the paper up well they will try and nibble
the newspaper.....which they seems to absolutely love. When I clean the cage, the newspaper is soaked in wee but the bedding is always very dry. The cage never
smells, it is only the hay that smells, but we all love that smell anyway. I don't think the piggies mind sleeping in their little black tictacs,
considering they do eat them as well!!! It's easy to clean the cage as well. All I do is roll up the newspaper and put it into a garbage bag.

peanut butter wrote: My last pair were girls. When Paisley, the passive one, died, I worried about her sister being alone. While Taffy did enjoy the company of foster guinea pigs in the area, she made it quite clear that she was top pig & loved being solo! My suggestion: if you have a local shelter or rescue group around, look into fostering-to-adopt a guinea pig to see how Peanut Butter does. You will see how they get along and get to see how the new pig fits your family. If it doesn't work out, you can take the pig back without having to "get rid" of a family member! |

gramma2pig wrote: Kudos to you! Sounds like you are doing everything right with your pig! Don't beat yourself up about getting them at a pet store. You aren't accountable for what you don't know, and you're hardly alone in not thinking of shelters & rescues! Pet stores are out to make money; they will say what it takes to make a sale. I don't know if they purposefully give out false information. (I work with educational programs with a local pet store chain & the workers likely making minimum wage are not shy about urging people to go to the shelter to look!) They don't employ people who are knowledgeable about their animals either. I understand about buying vs. adopting. My last pair were purchased from the pet store because I didn't know any better. They lived together in a small store cage. I've worked at the animal shelter for over 3 years now working with rabbits & anything smaller. I've learned so much & that's increased my guilt b/c I realize how much my previous pigs missed. My current pair, seen in my avatar, are living the lives of luxury in separate C&C cages after being surrendered b/c they were "unwanted births" from two pigs bought for Christmas! |

we are in the process of getting a guinea and want to add that our local petco has lots of animals now that are for adoption which have been abandoned. They
had two lil pigs in which a man had found outside Target dumped - to buy both was half the cost of the shop ones. The only problem that stopped us buying them
was I have no idea re sex / age etc of them so wanted to come home and read about them first - if I decided its the right thing will go and get them tomorrow,
if not will go to our local adoption center as we are lucky to have one in Denver.
