It's finally here!
The application that has been a dream and on the drawing board for a long time is ready. Please visit www.cavyrescue.com. The home page has a short summary of the intent and vision. The first menu item is the application: Cavy Classifieds. It's also the piggie icon on the top of the page.
This is an application that will allow you to post private placements of piggies looking for homes. At the same time, rescues and shelters that carry guinea pigs can also have a listing. You can limit your search to JUST private listings or just shelters or just rescues or all. You can see all listings or by state or for a zip code (I have to work on more searching and sorting capabilities).
And one of the really cool features (I think), is that when you are looking at a detailed listing, you can click a button to submit either a simple or a detailed adoption application and it will email your results to the lister and a copy of the data back to you. (Many private individuals don't have any idea about what kinds of questions to ask to screen people.)
Within the detailed view of the listing, you can also click on the Map It icon to get an idea of where the city or shelter is.
The drop down boxes are of course just about guinea pigs and not every other pet on the planet. I tried to keep it as simple, but as informative as possible.
As everyone here knows, there are a lot of forums, lists, groups and whatnot. When someone wants to find a home for a guinea pig, to post online about it has meant going to at least half a dozen places or hope that people cross post for you--if the person even knows about the online community. I hope this will provide a centralized place. GPAN has been okay in the past, but lacking in searching, sorting, and updating facilities.
There is also a forum dedicated to adopting and rescues.
The key to success of this site is traffic. When someone is looking, I hope they look here. As there is a firm no breeder, no shower policy, I know it will never be the only place, but I'm hoping that it is accepted as a strong and credible resource. Finding homes for the homeless and soon to be homeless before they end up in the shelters and rescues is the mission.
