I had gotten so many rave reviews!! :) It worked perfectly for about 2-3 days then I started to see how dirty it was and I stuck my hand in there and it was really soggy on the top so I went ahead and cleaned it. It was soaking on the top and really dry and almost new on the bottom!! ( ? ) So I went into the bedding section on CavyMadness and I thought I read that Tammy uses white pine! There is some of that at our local feed store also. Any experiences with that one! I haven't yet in 3 years of guinea pig owning found a bedding that REALLY caught my eye! Tammy- I know you are very busy! But could you maybe reply and tell me how often you change the white pine? How do you like it? Have you had anything before that was better? Thanx

Posts: 53 03/30/04 08:44 PM	I use pine that is kiln dried that I get from a feed store and really like it. I also line the bottom of the cage with about 1 inch on news paper...this combo has worked best for me.

Anyone who uses fleece i.e. icesprite and all the rest- I know icesprite said vaccum up poop every day and wash the fleece every 3 days! Would hidey holes and food bowls be enough to hold the fleece down? Do you put anything else under the fleece? Thanx

Posts: 3566 03/31/04 04:34 PM Moderator	Depends a lot on the pigs what you need on the fleece to keep it down. I put newspaper under the fleece - it helped keep the top drier. I was lucky - my pigs weren't into burrowing, and so I didn't need to weigh down the corners. If you have a pig like Kuma, good luck keeping the fleece on the floor!

Yes, if you have a subterranian pig like Kuma, it is difficult to keep it down. Now the babies play "let's march over the lump in the floor" game. Pooksied is right, it does depend a lot upon your pig. Lucy is the kind of pig who will nap out in the open so she can see what is going on, burrowing isn't her thing. Kuma on the other hand never relaxes unless she is in her house or under the fleece. At the moment I am using weights along the edges which works for a while. But she niggles at them, and eventually gets under. I have found the best trick is to use the weights and also put a scrunched up towel in the cage that she can burrow in. I am thinking of sewing her some kind of sleeping bag - I am sure she will like it. I still think the velcro will probably be a good idea, but the girls will all be moving into a new cage in the next week or so when I get my hands on some chloroplast. I am considering making ties at the edges of their fleece to tie it to the grids. Perhaps this will stop the burrowing. I put a couple of layers of newspaper under the fleece and also a folded up towel in the "pee corner". GP, my advice is to just get a length of fleece and try it. In the States, this is probably a perfect time to get your hands on some cheap stuff, as it is the end of your winter season. Let's say you can get a piece of fleece for $10... work out how many cage cleans with wood shaving type bedding you would get out of $10. Use the fleece that many times and then if you don't like it, toss it. You haven't wasted any money and you get to see if you like it yourself.

I've been watching them and they are making a great deal of mess! Chewing, burrowing, and tipping over food bowls! Does it take a little while for them to get used to it? Thanx, Alisa

Posts: 19 04/06/04 05:02 AM	Ok heres what I am doing... Its really different from everyone else and probably not good advise but its working for now. I had my 2 boys in verysmall cages and one of them was sneezing quite a bit and just depressed. So we put a real soft blanket down and put up the cube cage in a big octogon shape with a divider in the middle. I think for one they had a bit of an allergy to the bedding. also they have sooo much more room to run and play. They are so happy. Yes I have to clean to poos out quite alot but we put newspaper down under the blanket so it wouldnt soak the carpet. This is just a temporary fix for right now but the boys are lovin it!!!! i dont have to worry about dirty bedding. I am just gonna wash this blanket about every 3 days. So this is not what I am recommending for everyone its just working for us right now.

Posts: 240 04/07/04 01:05 AM	I think the theory is that black and white newsprint is okay because the ink is soy based and non toxic but you should avoid coloured print. So you have pigs that are part mole as well? If you find any ways to stop them burrowing please share!!

Of course only when they burrow! ;) Ques. On my fleece ( green ) there are all these little white spots were they've peed is that bad? I think it is just calcified pee??

Posts: 42 04/07/04 04:54 AM	Umm, I use the fleece with a thin layer of newspaper underneath. My piggies don't burrow, but I don't want them to get any big ideas. There's a bricked corner where the water bottles are and their hay rack in the other corner keeps that down. They have a cardboard tunnel up against one side, opposite the water bottles, so it's held down alright. I have a 2x4, so it's not enormous. I highly reccomend fleece. Shake off the poops once at night and I wash weekly.

The white urine splotches are ok. Just a bit of calciummy pee.

Posts: 50 04/07/04 09:37 PM	I've had my piggies for only nine weeks and I've used fleece for all but the first week. My piggies made such a mess with the Carefresh bedding that I switched to fleece and will never go back to loose bedding again! My girls are very skittish and when they get spooked (a bazillion times a day!) they send the Carefresh flying! I got tired of vacuuming the living room rug around their cage and the fleece looks so much neater. It's wonderful for cutting down on cleaning and is MUCH cheaper (2x5 C&C = mucho $ for bedding). Thankfully, my girls don't dig like moles but I use a full strip of masking tape along the sides to make sure they don't lift up the fleece. The fleece is great for giving the piggies traction when I wrustle a plastic bag and they circle around the cage like little race horses! Occasionally two of them will go in different directions and crash into each other! They're so cute and entertaining! Aren't piggies just the cutest things on earth?
