It should be. I wash my fleece with whisk. If they really took a liking to eating it, I might be a little more careful what I wash it in, but otherwise, I'm not too concerned.

Guineas Pigaus- fleece is working so far so good! When I put Rubee & Bell in their cage they started popcorning all over and of course they had to check out every corner I think they like it!! I really LOVE the fact that I don't have to vacuum the floor every hour to get the bedding cleaned up before it gets trampled all over the house! However I am having a little problem with vacuuming up the poos! it seems like I can't get the hose near the fleece without sucking up the fleece too ( I try so hard not to get too close then... SSUCKKK there goes the fleece!!!)I'm also trying the corner pottys. It looks like they're using them half the time & the other half they're saying na na nan & sticking their tongue out at me *I think they learned that from my 3 yr old* hehe! But anyways i'm rambling again!
I just wanted to let you know we're loving it so far! thanks Jami |

jj, my vacuum cleaner has a "power" control - both on the cleaner and the hose. It actually just controls how much air gets sucked in - i.e. the more air, the less strong.
I turn it to the lowest setting and don't have too much trouble with fleece getting sucked up. |

JJ, thanks for your kind words. I am still very much a beginner with guinea pigs as well, and it is a pleasure to share the things I have picked up along the way.
Guineas, it is so painful to put the fleece in the cage in a way such that they wont burrow under it that until it is cage cleaning time, I am *not* taking it out ;) I am extremely jealous about snow though. I want snow! |

I started using fleece last spring when I got some winter patterns really cheap at Walmart. I use 4 bricks - one in each corner - to hold the fleece down and also 2 in the middle which is where I put their food. A big heavy crock dish helps too. The bricks help to keep nails trim.
There are 2 corners that the piggies favor as a potty and I put an extra piece of fleece under those. ( face cloth sized that I cut out from extra fleece.) Extra laundry but you save on bedding cost and mess.... |

When I put my pig down on a towel or any kind of material (towels, my t-shirts) he starts pulling at it and tries to tear it....but aspen bedding just isn't working. The top will be very dirty and the bottom will be fresh. And whenever he popcorns or runs shavings go everywhere. I've got to try something so I'm gonna try fleece this weekend.

my rubee does the same thing! she'll take a thread of string from a towel and "go to town!" so I was worried too about it but she has left it alone so far. I think she likes it too much to want to ruin it (I HOPE!)I haven't had to pick up bedding from the floor in a week!!! *LOVIN' IT!* I'll tell ya I don't see myself going back to anything else anytime soon. I'd much rather vacuum poos up 2-3 times a day! & more when necessary! THOSE LITTLE POOPING MACHINES!! I wish it was good for something we all could make some money! Good Luck with the fleece! let us know how you like it!! ...Jami |

Good cleaning solution!! :) | #34
|
The fleece is working wonderfully for me! Great cost effective solution to other pricey bedding!! :)
I've found ( maybe ) a good non-toxic cleaner for cleaning coroplast or the bottom of a kiddie pool! I have a 32 ounce spray bottle and I use it to put my cleaning solution in I use... Half ( 16 ounces if you have a 32 ounce bottle ) plain white vinegar. Half ( 16 ounces ) water. It helps clean off the calcified pee!! :) Good disenfectant too!! ;) Tell me if you've used this to clean the bottom of your cage!! jjpiggie- How's the fleece working for you? Have you changed back to shavings? I hope not! Thanks -Alisa |

Keeping down the fleece | #36
|
Velcro is a good idea for burrowing piglets...when i get my pigs (i'm still working on their habitat....those two pigs are going to be very spoiled (: ) I'm going to sew velcro on the underside of the fleece and then use a non-toxic glue or a staple gun to attach the corresponding velcro to the coroplast. I'm thinkin some newspaper or a piddle pad in between would soak up any extra pee that the fleece doesn't absorb.
I have a hamster and my stepsister has bunnies that use pets' pick bedding. It smells nice, isn't very dusty, and depending on where you get it it is pretty inexpensive. Although, I do not know how or if it would work for pigs. |

Hi Guineas pigaus!
Wow I haven't been around in a while & i miss you all! I was having problems getting on the board & posting. I got a little frustrated & took some time away.. Fleece is working great! SOOOO much easier than loose bedding. I gotta say though when you have 4 little buggers running around they sure make messes QUICKLY. Bell's little boys are growing like weeds!! It dosen't seem like they were born 3 weeks ago! We just took them away from the girls since I noticed them trying to be grown ups, they're NOT happy (oh well!!) Now we've got to find them a home. Thanks for the cleaning solution! it sounds like a good one. I'll be trying it the next time i clean! Talk to you soon ...Jami |

Re: fleece | #38 | ||

jj - it only gets worse as they grow bigger and burrow!! The amount of poo I sweep out of the girls' cage daily... and they aren't cute little baby poos anymore either.
If only I could sell them for something! :P |

Hi icesprite!
I see what you mean! I didn't think something so small could poop so much! I wish we could make money on it too! I really hope my girls don't get the hang of burrowing!! That sounds messy! ...Jami |

I've gone through each and every one of the replies in this thread, and I'm really interested in trying this fleece material for my 5 pigs. I'm a little confused though...please excuse my ignorance! what exactly is this "fleece" you're talking about? Are you talking about that blanket-like fuzzy material that people use to sew things like pants and stuff?? Because I'm spending a fortune on beddings and I'm desperate to do something about it. Thx a lot!
