I found a deal on polar fleece at the dollar store, a large blanket for $5. I have tried using towels but of course they "hold" the moisture. The fleece looks much nicer. The only problems I have had is with the hay sticking to the fleece.

why not put the poop in your flower garden? I have been and seems to be working great (granted, I am new to piggies and may learn that this is not the way, but seems good for now) -- any thoughts from you veterans?

To be honest, I haven't found piggie poo fertilizer to be that great. It just seems to sit on the surface of the soil and never break down. By the same token, it is probably not harmful.
These days I just toss it into the compost heap. |

I've been reading on using Fleece for bedding. My only question is, don't they step in their poo and get it on their feet? I used just paper for awhile since one of my piggies developed a foot problem, and her feet were always poopy. When I picked her up, it would get all over my shirt.

My pigs usally don't step in thier own poo. It's either cleaned up or they avoid it! :) Hope you like fleece ( If you decide to use it. )
Thanx ~Alisa If you have any more questions feel more than welcome to post. I'm always learning new things about fleece bedding. Good Luck! ;) |

I think I will try it, but I don't think I'll use it in the smaller pen. maybe it would just be too hard to avoid stepping in. I'll try it in the wading pool. I kind of move my pig around to which ever room I'm in. the smaller pen is in the kitchen and I think I'll stick with freshcare, or whatever it's called, but definately would be cheaper in the pool. So you just throw it in the washing machine every 3 days and shake it out daily? interesting.....

I use a Combination of fleece blankets, Washable puppy pads and corner litterpans.
I place the puppy pads down first then the fleece on top (i put the puppy pads so that the coroplast dosen't stay moist), Then i place the corner litterpans down (one underneath my ramp and one near the hay basket). Then i just periodically sweep up any poop through out the day and change the litter boxes every other day. With this cleaning routine i have, the longest i have gone without changing the whole cage bedding was a week and two days (i wouldn't recomend waiting that long unless you have alot of free time on your hands to keep up with the poop cleaning), and even when i went to clean out the cage, there wasn't any smell. |

Everyone talks about puppy pads. How much are they? I use newspaper/fleece but puppy pads might not smell as bad.
Any experiences? ~Alisa |

OK, I just read this topic through, let me get this straight... When you say fleece, you mean that you are using a blanket, a fleece blanket as the floor of the cage?
So once a day you take it our shake it out and put it back? How often do you replace/wash it? I have one male intact pig in a Marchioro cage about 2X4 feet. I am currently using carefresh bedding, but this sounds like something neat. Please explain more!! |

S I G H...
Not to be mean or anything, ( I'm completely open to questions ) But... To be completely honest we've all explained this information more than once! So if you'd do me and all other fleece owners a favor I think we'd appreciate it! If you have questions please look back on the numerous other fleece posts we've started... They have all your questions answered in them. Bottom Line: I'm trying to say... Please try to find your answers in other posts before you post a fresh question. If then you can't find the question and answer... I'll be happy to answer your question. :) If I sound mean please don't take it the wrong way... I just have answered the same questions over and over and over again! Thanx With Best of Luck and Regards, ~Alisa |

No problem whatsoever. I forgot that I had "New" posts only showing and didn't realize I was on page 3 of 3 in this thread. My bad, no hard feelings. Patti... |

Re: puppy pads | #55 | ||

The puppy pads I use are really great (not to be mistaken for the plastic type that are disposable).
It's the type that are also used for hospital patients that are bed ridden. I got mines on ebay, usually you can find it in the dog bedding section or under the ferrets section, I bought mines for 5 for $3.00 each (they're 30" x 35"). They're used, but in really good condition. |

That's great, Maybe I'll look at the ferretstore or on ebay! I use newspaper now and my newspaper resources are running short!
If I can't find puppy pads... Does anyone know where I could get a load of newspaper? Thanks for all your questions and answers they are great! ~Alisa |

Could you ask your neighbours if they regularly get newspapers that you can have once they have finished with them? Alternatively, sometimes newsagents give away old papers that they haven't sold.
The puppy pads intrigue me too. I have never heard of anything like that. What are they made of? I will have to have a bit of a hunt around also. |

Fleece - How Thick? | #58 | ||
|
OK, I put the fleece in there and I am vaccuming the poops once per day. So far so good and not smelly. Of course, one blanket will not be enough for the long term, so I was wondering, the blanket I have is pretty thick and floded over like 2 or three times... How much fleece do you put in, just one thickness or more?
I like the wee pad idea, so when I buy some new fabric, I will probably get enough to overlap the sides of the cage to I can put the wee pads underneath and not worry that he'll eat them and get a blockage. Please let me know... |

One is good... | #59 | ||

Hi,
I use just one piece ( 1 layer also ) then underneath I put a thick bed of newspaper underneath. You could do 2 or 3 layers but... I find that the second or third layer tends to get really wet and soggy because the fleece wicks away but only to the second layer so the pee sits on the second layer (But that's just my experience) So I use 1 layer of fleece...but you can probably get away with two. Just my thoughts ~Alisa |

I tried the pine shavings, then the fleece, back to the pine shavings and now I'm sticking with the fleece. It's awesome! I make sure the fleece is bigger than the coroplast. I put a flannel-backed tablecloth on the coroplast, vinyl side up, then the fleece. My cage is inside the coroplast so the edges of the cage hold the fleece in place and the pigs can't burrow underneath. I have three fleece pieces so I always have a clean one available til I wash the others. It's been wonderful.
At least once each day, I sweep the cage with a whisk broom and dustpan. The piggies are used to it already and move to the other end of the cage til I'm done. Then when I go to the other side of the cage, they move away from me again--not in fear, but just to give me room. It's funny, and it shows that piggies are not dumb animals at all. And the best part is: no more pine shavings mess all over. |
