Any discount store like Wal-Mart will have them. All you need is ordinary kitchen scales that you use to weigh food.

A scale that comes with a bowl is helpful (so your guinea pig doesn't jump off while you're weighing him), or one that can be recalibrated after putting on a basket or bowl, so you're weighing just the guinea pig. I've seen pictures of someone that uses a loaf pan to put thier pig in. Perfect!

Choosing a good scale (a few thoughts) | #4 | ||
|
Hi There,
I would suggest that folks shop around before making their purchase. (And) please keep in mind that choosing the cheapest scale available is not a bargain by any means. Very often these varieties will not hold their accuracy, and the owner may not be aware of this. In sickness and in health...weighing-in these animals is all about grams (or ounces). Because you are dealing with smaller increments, you want these figures to be accurate, and a scale that is sensitive enough to reflect such changes. When I went shopping around for a scale I knew that I wanted a digital variety, and chose the postal scale route. The task for me was locating one that was accurate, affordable, and would hold its own. It was on this board (a few years ago) that someone suggested a certain model that s/he owned. I went around to various office stores, and finally at my last stop (**The Office Place**) I lucked out. This scale had everything I was looking for. Here is the the name of it and its features. SUNBEAM Postal Scale (Digital/Electronic) Model SP5 Weighs both in grams or ounces (click to choose) Capacity to 5 pounds or 2.2kg Weighs in 0.1oz/1gram increments Tare/Zero adjust feature 9 volt battery operation low battery warning compact design Price $28.00 (CDN) Because the scale is compact, I place my animals in a small box to weigh them (infact the inner box that the scale came in). The tare/zero weight feature (recalibration as Pooksied mentioned) is a sure bonus. Catch you on the next wave... Best Regards, Rosalee |

Hi,
I own the same scale and I have to say that its great. It looks good, it is very durable and attractive, and it is easy to use. I bought mine at OfficeMax and I second Rosalee's recommendation. Big buttons... Easy read display... Accurate... Compact... I think I love my scale. P.S. sorry for any wierdness in this post, its my first one ;-) |

Hi Alisa,
Thanks for taking the time to list the features of your new scale (including price and place of purchase). Its great to see more digital models that are affordable! I don't know how often you were weighing your cavies before, but here are a few thoughts: Please weigh your animals in a CONSISTANT manner: -same time of day -either before or after meals (choose one) -keep your scale and notepad in an obvious place -record their weights each and every time While weekly weigh-ins are the minimum suggested, I personally find that too long a stretch. Alot can occur within 7 days time which the owner may not be aware of. To be on top of things I recommend you weigh your sweeties every 3-4 days (or more often). During the summer months I increase the weigh-ins, having experienced some unusual (if not concerning) fluctuations. Alisa, at this time I hope you'll consider weighing your animals DAILY (for the next 4-6 weeks). While these entries may sound like alot right now, the figures gathered will provide you a more intimate portrait on: -certain normal (or abnormal) daily fluctuations -comparative (often similar trend) ups and downs between cagemates -assist to determine baseline weight (range) of each animal. Well, that is all for this go around... Here's to your cavies' good health! Best Regards, Rosalee |

Ok, I need another idea. I tried the kitchen scales, but the one I got only goes to 16 1/2 ounces. My boyfriend laughed his butt off because when I put our piggie Bam-Bam on those scales, it went clear to the bottom. So the kitchen scales didn't work for me. I am guessing that he is at least 2 lbs., but not for sure now. It was kind of humerous that he "tipped" the scales. So any other suggestions? hahahaha Also, is there any way for me to tell how old Bam-Bam is? I rescued him and have no idea his age. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many kitchen scales come in 1lb, 2lb and 5lb maximums. Some scales come larger than that, but you want something that will break down to ounces or grams. I've got a 4-5lb kitchen scale, which is perfect. You need a new, larger, kitchen scale.

Hi thought I would let you know what I use for my little girls, I have some electronic scales but take the bowl off and use a cardboard box to putt little piggie in - much safer for them. I weigh the box first or set it to zero with the box on then weigh the little ones. I found it hard to find scales with a big enough bowl to hold them in. Hope this helps..Laine
