Re: Scales | #21 | ||

Just wanted to say that my husband upgraded my herd's scale to the same one Alisa has (by the description, I think it's the same). I use the bowl off the other one and just tare the weight before I put the pig in. It's fabulous! Very easy to read and you can quickly go from pounds to grams. I highly reccomend the investment.

I definitely suggest digital/electronic scales because you can get much more accurate with the measurements. I got my scale from Meijers, it is a Sunbeam I believe. Most scales are around $30.

I have been looking around at the Pelouze Postal Scale and the Sunbeam Postal Scale SP5... they appear to be the same scale.....not sure though
What do you all think of this scale... My Weigh's 3001P scale. The 3001-P WEIGHS IN 4 DIFFERENT MODES! CAPACITY: POUNDS/OUNCES: 6 LB 10 OZ POUNDS: 6.650 LB GRAMS: 3000 G KILOGRAMS: 3.000 KG RESOLUTION: POUNDS/OUNCES: 0.1 OZ POUNDS: 0.005 LB GRAMS: 1 G KILOGRAMS: 0.001 KG It comes with it's own bowl and average costs is 29.90. Not sure where to find it in a BM store, but it is an online find...which means shipping (unless I can find it at Amazon) here is a link The 3001 P Scale My Weigh has a bigger one for like 6 more dollars... the 7001 xp |

Digital Postal Scales... | #25
|
Hey Tofu,
Just curious as to how much the shipping would be (since you mentioned it) and why not shop in person? The 3001P looks very good indeed, and compared with the Sunbeam model, it also has a few more features which may come in handy. The higher weight capacity (7001P) is not really necessary unless you have other uses for the scale. I noticed that the plastic tub is about 7 inches square, so chances are you would need to use something else to weigh your animals in (but that is a simple matter). Catch you on the next wave... Re: Digital Postal Scales... | #26

You know I haven't even bought it yet. It was mainly for Neena as she lost weight before I brought her home to care for her. I wanted to track it daily. But now I think I want it to track my herd's weight regularly.
snap, I didn't even notice the 7 by 7 by 3 dimensions of the container.... Who knows I may give it a try, but I do think the shipping will be a pain. At work we have a good happy chef/magic chef/wonderful chef..... I think it was a walmart scale.... I'd have to check out wal mart... I've checked at target and it wasn't there.... |

Oh Tofu,
Don't even think about it...both in sickness and in health YOU DO WANT TO TRACK your herd's weight on a regular basis! I picked up my digital postal scale at a business supply shop. I absolutely wanted certain key features, and I got it with the Sunbeam model. Why not call around in your area and see what's available in digital models. Best Regards, Rosalee |

I saw the Sunbeam aka Pelouze model, what do you use for the bowl to weigh them? I noticed someone said they used the box.....

The Box... | #29 | ||
|
Your a riot Tofu, as I am the someone who uses the box (the scale came in). I do have a wash cloth on the bottom (just in case), but in all my years of weighing them, the only event that ever transpires is the odd poop.
You can weigh your sweeties in anything, as long as their four feet are on the ground (so to speak). You don't want anything too large, but rather something with a few inches leeway for their comfort, and room enough for you to handle with ease. Lately I've been tempted to replace "the box" for a newer model, and chances are it will be one of those tidy plastic baskets from the Dollar Store. As for the "washcloth" - well, that's still in good shape! Regards Again, Rosalee |

hahaha I am just being picky about the scale.... I'm always like that. I think I'll just go and get teh Sunbeam aka Pelouze scale. I was told at Office Max that they are the exact same scale..... only one is 3 dollar cheaper (sunbeam).

Batteries not included... | #31

Hey again Tofu!
Don't forget to pick up a 9V battery (if that's what it still takes) and of course a notebook to record your devils' weights. Happy Shopping! Rosalee |

ok I went out today after I went to the bank and got the Pelouze scale which is basically the Sunbeam from the pics I've seen. I put in the battery and tested it on Lady Starbuck using the box... She was something like 1kg 134g I didn't writeit down......I need to reread my books to see if that is a healthy weight.... I did create a spreadsheet to keep track of their weight. Bu tI need to tweek it a bit.

Congratulations... | #33

on your new scale; and don't forget to use it!
I love my notebook; no tweeking required, just a pen and a dedicated schedule. What can I say, I'm old. I think you'll have an interesting time of it Tofu - especially with 7 devils on board. On average I weigh my two boars 2-3 times a week, and when need be - more often. As for your female of 1134 grams; no book can really determine what is a healthy "individual" weight, but rather, merely an average span for the male or female. For example, my 2 sweeties couldn't be more different, with one weighing an average of 1007grams while the other is 1580grams. Anyway... so glad to hear about your new arrival - and use it well (and often)! Catch you on the next wave... Rosalee |

Just curious, some of my piggies are losing a few grams, could it be because I recently switched them, after transitioning their pellets, from the Nutriphase Alfalfa pellets to the Kleenmama Timothy Pellets? They are all healthy and bright eyed. I've read that the Timothy pellets are better for adult piggies, and all mine are adults :)

Losing a few grams... | #35

'Morning Tofu,
What type of figures are we talking here, and, in the 2 1/2 weeks (that you've had the scale) how many times have you weighed them? Changing the pellets could have an effect on their weight; how long was your "transitional" period? Catch you on the next wave (after 3pm) Regards, Rosalee |

Re: Losing a few grams... | #36

I transitioned their pellets for about 1.5 weeks. and I have weighed them three times. I know that after a while I should see a trend. And that three times is not enough. I tend to weigh them on my days off.

Your herds' weight... | #39
|
On page one of this thread I made the suggestion for folks to weigh their animals "on a daily basis" for the first 4-6 weeks of owning their scale, and, thereafter every 3-4 days - or more often. Some folks may roll their eyes at this labour, but the numbers attained are more than mere statistics, as they will provide the owner an intimacy of both normal and unusual up/down fluctuations (with prompt recovery) or, should the animal be on a downward slide, an early alert and intervention.
I'm glad I asked for "the numbers please" - and while the change in pellets may have contributed to a certain loss with respect to Morgan, Starbuck and possibly River (at 42 grams), it is Kukui that is most concerning (down by 62 grams). Please weigh your animals TONIGHT and fill us in. Thanks ever so much. One more thing Tofu, how are your animals housed (ie: are they all together, or in smaller groups)? Please give the names in each group. Thanks. Regards, Rosalee |

Just got back in from work. I will try to weigh them before they get their veggies
Kukui, Morgan and River are housed together Lady Starbuck, Truffles, Mothra and Larry Apple-ton are all housed seperately but next to each other so they can still talk :) also I have been meaning to weight them more often as the first one could have been rushed.... or not accurate.... or I could have read it wrong... something. :) |
