Posts: 3 02/14/07 12:21 AM	Tags : memory, friends A few weeks ago, someone dropped off five or six 2 month old abyssinian guinea pigs off at Petco. i adopted one of these and my boyfriend chose to buy one from the store. unfortunatly my boyfriends guinea pig got a URI and the antibiotics didnt help him. he ended up dieing before we even put the two guinea pigs together. Later that day we went back to Petco and adopted one more of the abyssinian guinea pigs.They are supposidly from the same litter, but even if they arent, they did grow up together. when we finally put the two together, they were like best friends. they were climbing all over each other and are always together in the cage. i dont know anything about guinea pig's memory, and i was curious if they remembered each other from before we got them and seperated them?

Posts: 138 02/14/07 12:45 AM	Sorry to hear about the pig dying. Unfortunetly, all of us on these boards have heard the same story over and over again, which is sad and not your fault. Pet store pigs are usually sold with some type of illness that the buyer has no idea it has...but usually the employees do and the employees have no idea what they are talking about most of the time when telling the person about guinea pigs. I am glad that the other one didnt catch the illness and you decided to adopt another one. Anyway about the memory, as far as I know seperating them longer than about a week is about how long they remember other guinea pigs. I could be wrong because I really havent researched this subject too much though. I would look through previous posts on here and on guinealynx.com and see what you can find. Another website to check out (if you havent checked it out already) for building your own cage is guineapigcages.com. Very easy and simple to make and way less expensive than those glorified litter boxes the petstores sell.

Posts: 3 02/14/07 01:46 AM	i felt awfull afterwards. i tried so hard. but he lived a good life. my parents got a guinea pig first. and are in love with it so they gave me a guinea pig magazine, and one of the articles was a bout buying a health guinea pig. the first guinea pig i almost bought had a bald spot and the clerk told me it was ring worms and they couldnt sell it to me, because it had to go to the vet. i was dissapointed because it was a teddy, and thet is my favorite breed. but also glad to see they were going to take care of it. another pet shop i went to had way to many guinea pigs in a too small cage. they we're willing to make me an offer, since they had so many. only a few looked healthy, but if one's sick, they usualy all are. i felt so bad i was tempted to get 2 just to get them out of the small cage and try and get them health. but i am an animal lover and it's so hard for me to see them die. anyways. thank you. i've only owned one other guinea pig, so i've never seen how they interact for the first meeting. maybe this is how most guiea pigs react together. i just thought it was one of the most adorable things i have ever seen. i actually sent to cavy cages and built a c&c cage. its a 2x4 grid with a small second level. i made sure they each have all of their own things, water bottle food dish and houses. so far, they love it.

Posts: 20 02/20/07 12:56 AM	I know my girls remember me longer than one week. I was gone on a trip for 2 weeks once. I had a friend look after them for me. When I got home they were so happy to see me. They squeaked up a storm, ran around the cage like fools, popcoring everywhere. I cuddled them each for a good 5 minutes. My friend said that everytime she came in the visit them or feed them or anything, they hid in their hidey and wouldn't come out. They definately know the difference between me and her. And I knew they remembered me. So I believe they have some kind of a memory. They aren't totally stupid.
