I'm in Riverside County, maybe we could get something together half way between us. I'm sure theres other piggy people in S. Ca. that would join us.

You can email me at summer.dauria@hotmail.com and we could definitely try to make it work. I am not sure how to find a place between us (especially with grass not treated that the piggies can be on). Let me know if you have any ideas... |

Did you guys ever all get together? I think my pigs would have fun with new friends. I live in North County California, anywhere between Temecula and San Diego
is travel-able. Or is anyone from the coast, Oceanside area?

No, but I think it would be so much fun. I wouldn't know how to begin to put together a pignic. Anyone have any ideas to do this?

The link at the top of the forum to the Pignic page has basic instructions on how to do a pignic.
The hardest part, really, is to find a place to hold it, and to get a quorum to attend. You need a place that is pesticide-free (if your pigs will be eating the grass) that is not dog-friendly (that can be tricky). After that, its picking a date, getting the word out, and hoping the pigs will come. If you ever have specific questions, feel free to ask. I've assisted with the Boston pignic for a number of years, now! |

In order to find a park that is pesticide free and not dog-friendly, who would I call?

The town hall of whatever town the park is in. For Wellesley, it was the natural resources commission. You may need to go through the directory, and find what
looks closest to land conservation, or some kind of property management - if you've got the wrong place, they should know what department to transfer you
to.
If the park is managed (like Trustees of the Reservation), then you should contact the park management. Dog friendliness can usually be determined by taking a walk around the park on a nice afternoon. If you see a lot of dogs, especially off leash, its probably not a great place for a pignic. (The Wellesley town hall bowl has geese and ducks in the area, so they ask to keep dogs to a minimum, and generally people won't bring their dogs there.) Park management may know of a quiet corner of the place, too, that might be best to hold a pignic. If the park has any on-line presence, they will sometimes post their pesticide policies, which helps. Many areas, if there is heavy kid/toddler traffic, will have a pesticide-free policy. It can be hard making the first call, but I've generally found people helpful and at least somewhat entertained by the idea. You should be able to get some direction after that. |
