The next day, I took the younger peruvian piggie, Gerty, to see the vet and everything checked out fine. Her weight was 2 lb 6 oz. The vet suggested we get a new piggie as soon as we could bring ourselves to do it, since Gerty had never lived alone. We don't live near any rescues or adoption places for piggies, so we went to Petco and got a lovely abyssinian who is a real spazz and we love her a bunch already.
After about a week, I noticed Gerty's eyes were crusty and one eye was getting red. She had no other signs and was eating and squeaking like a maniac. She had taken to snuggling with the new piggie, Nellie Rose, and the two were inseparable. I went back to the vet, who diagnosed pink eye. She got eye cream and liquid Baytril. Then, he said she had lost about 5 ounces since last time. I know this amount of weight loss is bad (down to 2 lb 1 oz) I was given Critical Care to feed her . Both vets checked her teeth and only one said they were growing at an slight angle, but they were not occluded.
I give her about 15 g of CC every day and she uses the antibiotics and eye cream w/o troubles. She is drinking and eating, too.
I bought a postal scale and began weighing her (and the new baby) every day. Gerty was holding steady for the several days at 2.1, went up to 2.2 for a day then held at around 2 lb 0.6. I left her with a sitter for two days and now she's down to 1 lb 15 oz. She is drinking and eating all the while. She is still full of energy but squeaks less since Alice died (God, I miss that piggie so very much, such a royal lady).
I've heard Baytril makes them lose weight sometimes. I wonder if she needs another trip to the vet and a different antibiotic? How much fluctuation in weight is normal? I think the first 2 lb 6 oz weight might have been an error, by the way. That much weight loss would mean a real difference in behavior I would think. I can't handle losing another one so close to losing Alice, of blessed memory.
Any thoughts on my manifesto up there?
