Posts: 12 03/30/08 11:51 AM	Tags : sick, sneezing, toby, mites, ears, ear Toby, my new guinea pig, is very sweet. But he has some things that seem to be worring me. He jumps around shaking his head, I reconize the jumping as "popcorning" but the head shaking and ear scratching worrys me. He sneezes, alot, it was cute at first because he would sneeze and wipe his little nose with his paw. Will he be ok? I can take him to the store vet for free because he hasn't been here for 15 days yet, oh and he was shaking his head in the store, he looked so cute doing it, thats what made me pick him :-/

Posts: 4102 03/30/08 05:11 PM Moderator	Unfortunately, many, many guinea pigs sold at pet stores are ill. Its very likely he has an upper respiratory infection. URIs can be fatal if left untreated. I have heard too many horror stories about sick guinea pigs returned to the pet store. I have not heard of a pet store that treats the guinea pig for free and send them back home for treatment. Unless this store is different? Usually, you have to surrender the pet back to the pet store, and get your money back. They say they will re-sell you the pet when it gets better. But the pet store either doesn't have the proper vet access, the knowledge to properly treat the guinea pig, or its just not worth their time and effort to restore the guinea pig to health. Cuts too much into profits. Cheaper to let that one go, and sell you a different one. It would be better if you took Toby to a cavy-savvy vet, get him treated yourself, then bring the vet bill to the pet store and demand to be reimbursed. Either way, he should be seen by an experienced guinea pig vet ASAP.

Posts: 12 03/30/08 05:27 PM	well on my receit for toby it says if your new pet becomes ill within a 15 day period of purchase they will provide free vetanarian care. We have the money to take him to another vet, BUT, we have to take, hold on toby just wee'd on me......yuck! lol anyway we have to take 2 sick cats to the vet and lo'and behold, are dogs need heart worm pills again, will be broke after all that So we have to try this....he sneezes less often now but I'm still woried. Plus ALL the vets in my city are closed today

Posts: 12 03/31/08 09:06 PM	they told me to put hydronated poroxide in his ears, for about 3 or 4 days. Its not a URI, his eyes are very clear and he could also be allergic to pollen. Being spring if this is true I will have to limit his outside time. He acts fine and he hasn't completely stopped sneezing, it made me mad because he sneezed twice on the way home lol but hes acting fine. And he hasn't sneezed since he got home, hes in my lap right now. Tommorow (just in case) I'm going to go buy some ear mites medicine, its only $4.00, so I think we can do it

Posts: 4102 03/31/08 09:26 PM Moderator	Be sure whatever you get for the mites does not contain pyrethrins, since they can be harmful to guinea pigs. I am confused if he was sneezing at the pet store how it could be from allergies from your cat or from pollen. It would seem that whatever he's been sneezing at has been consistent since you bought him. I would continue to keep an eye on him, and weigh him regularly, to ensure he's staying healthy.
