I have two female piggies. We got Daisy first and a few months later we got Capsi, because we thought Daisy needed company. In retrospect we didn't
introduce them particularly well, but for the last two years they've been doing alright. Daisy has never been thrilled about Capsi, who can be a bit of a
pest, but they are usually fine when not in heat. When their dominance tiff's go a bit overboard for too long (or they are in heat), separating them for a
few hours seems to do the trick. When we pick up Daisy, Capsi sometimes wheeks for a minute, as if she's afraid she'll never see her again, but calms
down quickly enough. This week has gotten out of control though. They started the incessant rumblestrutting, arguing over who could sit in the house (sharing
is out of the question apparently), playing "I can put my nose higher than yours", lunging (no biting, the worst they have ever done is take a few
hairs with them, which usually gets them separated for awhile) and Capsi became obsessed with sticking her nose up Daisy's behind fur again. Sometimes
Capsi doesn't seem to know when to quit with the dominance business (sometimes Daisy makes it clear she's finally backing down and Capsi keeps
going..and, again, a few minutes or a few hours of separation does the trick), however this time it didn't. Though she'll sit on our laps long enough
to eat her greenies, the rest of the time she wheeks as if in a panic. She won't hold still for long to be petted and keeps trying to run off (not normal
behavior for her). Even her beloved chin rubs are of less interest to her! I'd think she's hurt, but I can find no signs of it and all of her wheeking
seems intended to get back to Daisy. When we took Daisy out and left Capsi in the cage, Capsi squealed the entire time at the top of her little piggie lungs.
When we put Daisy back, she pestered Daisy worse than ever. She actually started standing on the poor pig! She wheeked for hours on end last night, sat in
the pig pen (their fenced floor space that is over 1meter square, which she usually LOVES) as close to the cage Daisy was in and wheeked if we were in the room
or we passed too close to the living room. When we tried putting Daisy in the pigpen with her, she chased the poor thing. She did calm down when we went to
bed last night, but when I got up, she started again and was sitting as close to the cage as she could get. I was actually able to watch tv for a bit this
morning and didn't have to rely solely on the subtitles (yup, she's that loud), I was able to get up and talk to her for a second, but the moment I
turned to Daisy, Capsi started up again. Needless to say, Daisy is fine with the separation, but Capsi isn't getting any better very fast. Capsi did let
me pat her for a minute this morning before starting her tantrum again. She's back in the cage (in the beloved house) again and Daisy is in the pig pen
and all is quiet at the moment, but we suspect that is mostly because there are no two-leggeds in the living room right now. We are thinking of going and
buying a second cage this week, but we aren't sure that will solve the problem either. Capsi is THAT determined not to be separated at all from Daisy.
It's, well, strange! And though none of the behaviors are completely new, the intensity is! Do ovarian cysts cause such a sudden change? Seriously, two
days ago they were calm and happy and had been that way for weeks. Going into heat is one thing, but this is..well...frustrating for everyone!!!!
