I am going to try and check wiht the owner today and try and have vets she can call line up. It is tough because she is on SSI and a limited weekly income due to having a payee. Hopefully it will all work out...For some reason I see myself aquiring this little guy in the future.

I put my research goggles on and dove in and was able to locate an exotics vet who offers a free health exam to first time clients. The woman I am working with called, explained the problem and has set an appointment for this coming Monday! Fortunately I was able to shuffle my meetings around and will be able to take her-otherwise she would have had a long trek on the bus. I will let everyone know how it goes!

I hope he is okay too. I have let her know that if she feels she is unable to properly care for him that I would be willing to take care of him. My husbands heart is slowly opening up to the world of guinea pigs and yesterday he was talking about helping build a bottom for a C & C cage and getting another piggie!!! My heart lept for joy (ha ha). Due to the owner being fairly impulsive I think she bought the animal spur of the moment and did not consider what goes into the proper care of the critters. I hope he is okay though..

Great news. Took him in yesterday and he got a clean bill of health from the vet! The vet recommended the owner gets a bigger cage and gives him more excercise and more hay! She was happy about the whole thing and now wants to get a C & C cage....Unfortunately I had to take my piggie back to the Humane Society (not for keeps just for surgery) to get yet ANOTHER abcess removed =( I don't know how much more her can take, this is the thirs abcess as a result of him being neutered

I feel bad for him too. I understand the Humane Societies mission but I don't understand why they would spay/nueter animals that are so tiny and live in cages to begin with. I dropped him off at the Humane Society and will find out in the morning wether he has to undergo another surgery. He was nueterd on April 27th and I adopted him on June 3rd, at that time one vet (not at the Humane Society) told me has was not nuetered. What he was feeling and seeing ended up being two abcessess at the neuter site! One ended up popping and draining on its own and the other one stayed. So he was operated on. He pulled through fine and was back to his normal happy piggie self. Then I noticed last night another abcess that had popped and a little hole. When I looked before taking him to the vet it was smaller but hard. The vet suspects that he has a reaction to whatever kind of surgical 'thread" they used to tie him up. When I speak to him again I am going to ask what I can do. He doesn't act like anything is wrong and has continued to gobble up hay like it was his last day on earth and attempt to poop as much as their are people on the earth! I hope he does okay, I just don't know how much a tiny little creature can take as far as surgeries. I wonder if their are any herbs or holistic ways of preventing future abcesses?

Well he was operated on yesterday morning and the Humane Society kept him over night and hopefully I will be able to pick him up today. From what I understand from what the doctor told me was their was dead tissue remaining after the last surgery that caused the abcess (it wa removed). I am hoping that the removal of the tissue will end all these nasty abcesses, thankfully though this one was not as big. Last time I was sent home with pain medication and antibiotics. The doctor said he would be sending me home with the same regiment this time. They did not tell me about saline- I will ask. Last time he was all healed up and I sould not even tell where he was operated on. I have really been impressed with the level of knowledge and care of the doctors at the Humae Society so I feel confident in their ability to take care of the little guy! Plus through all this I have learned more that I thought I would about the biology and anatomy of the guinea pig.

He is doing great!
He weighs a little over 2lbs now and has put back on his weight and is eating like it is going out of style. After all the babying he got post surgery he has now got me and my husband wrapped around his little paw and squeaks loudly (so loud his ears fly back with each squeak) whenever we open the fridge, crinkle a bag, or walk by him - demanding treats..Hard to turn him down and he he always enjoys a little wrastle too...I snapped some pictures of him layed out lounge stlye under the futon and will post soon!
