Posts: 331 04/08/09 02:10 PM	Tags : edit, read, second, post, made EDIT: AUGUST 27, 2009 Hershey has been sneezing and eating very little pellets. He's drinking normal and eating hay as normal. and, he's eating his apple slices that he loves. The vet said he may have some kind of infection, didn't tell me what kind, and prescribed him smz antibotic (the pink stuff) with bene-bac to help prevent diarherra. He has been on it for almost a week and a half and he has to go back tomorrow, because he's not doing so well. I'm trying everything I can to make him feel better, so hopefully she can figure out something to make him feel better. But, does anybody know what it could be? He's been sneezing and had a little bit of balled up diraherra. (Which I was told from another site, the diarherra may be from the antibotic.) Thanks for any advice!! Posts: 4102 04/08/09 04:38 PM Moderator	He's had lumps before, right? that you needed surgically removed? A pig that has cysts or abscess once, is very likely to get them again. It could be the same thing again, or something different. You should have it checked out by the vet. The vet may be able to lance it, give him antibiotics, and have you flush it out, or he may need to surgically remove it. If you could, please keep all of Hershey's medical questions to a single thread in the Medical forum. It makes it easier keep track of his history, and therefore easier for me to reply to your medical questions. Sometimes unrelated things are related (and in this case, if he's had lumps before, this new lump is very likely related to the old one). Thanks!

Posts: 331 04/28/09 08:36 AM	Hershey's lump is just a cyst. Nothing too serious. Right now he has a GI infection from drinking tap water from another state. We were on vacation in Jersey and the vet stated the tap water might have hurt his GI. He's on critical care and I'm giving him water through a syringe. He keeps tooting when I'm holding him and he squeals. I just called the vet back today to see what she wants to do. EDIT medication he was put on: Metacam Oal (.16cc) and SMZ-TMP Suspension (antibotic) He seems really out of it. I'm hoping this helps him feel better. Posts: 331 05/03/09 08:58 AM	Hershey is eating pellets, hay, and a little bit of apples. He won't eat baby carrots, like he used to, but that just might be his taste buds or something. He's also drinking a lot more than he has. So, I think the medicine is working. :)

Posts: 4102 08/28/09 06:14 AM Moderator	I'm guessing the vet was thinking respiratory infection, from the sneezing? Did the vet say anything about what he thought was infected? "Balled up" and "diarrhea" seem mutually exclusive. If he's getting balled up poo, that sounds like he's impacted. If he was having diarrhea, his poos would have no form at all. The impaction would have nothing to do with an infection -- that can be from a variety of issues, from not enough roughage to not enough exercise. If he's still sneezing, it sounds like he still has the upper respiratory infection, but its possible, too, that it could be his heart (although heart conditions usually present with wheezing, not sneezing). Please don't replace the first post with updates. The purpose of having a single thread is to have a complete medical history on your pig. If you replace the first post, we lose the medical history, and it entirely defeats the intent of a medical thread. You can add it to the bottom -- I know that any time a thread is updated, to scroll to the bottom for the most recent post. Thanks.

Posts: 331 08/30/09 01:26 PM	Hershey has had normal stools since I was asked by the vet, to take him off the antibotics to see if that helps. She sent a sample to a lab to see if there's any bacteria in his stools that shouldn't be. Also, stated this back teeth are sideways instead of straight, so the eating and sneezing are from him not be able to chew from the back teeth. He's going for a teeth trim on Weds. Just thought I'd give an update.

Posts: 331 09/02/09 02:49 PM	Hershey's at the vet right now, but I called to see how everything went. He's doing fabolous they stated he was up and drinking plenty of fluids an eating hay and a little bit of strawberry. I can't wait to pick him up. He's my best friend and he means a lot to me.
