hi, ive just joined. one of my piggies got quite ill over night and im totally stumped. she is very wobbly on her feet, kind of like a piggie coming round from
anesthetic. 3 of her legs seem weak, she has a head tilt and has lost mobility and she seems confused at times. she is beginning to grow in confidence and is
slowly moving around more (shes a fighter!) i did notice a slight seizure the other day but not any more since. the vet has given antibiotics in case of
abscess and ive been giving her more vit c. ive to go back next week to the vet but i guess what i would like to know is what caused this and what could it be,
should i put for an x ray? i would be thankful for any help

Is this a vet experienced with cavies? To have a seizure, she is obviously quite ill. It may have been a stroke. It may be an infection in the brain
region-antibiotics will help that.
I hope someone more expert than me can give you answers. An xray will only help if you know what you are looking for. make sure she keeps eating. Maybe try another vet? |

An abscess or infection in her skull may be visible on an xray. The stumbling symptoms could be caused by an inner ear infection or a stroke. Scurvy can
certainly cause the symptoms you describe, as well. What is her normal diet? Do you know if she's getting plenty of vitamin C?
You say you saw her have a seizure? Can you described what it looked like? How old is she? What did the vet do with the abscess? Oh, and lastly, how's she eating? I hope she's keeping her weight up. |

hi, she is doing much much better.there's no external abscess, the vet said it was a neurological issue. she is drinking well and almost eating normally
(more 80% normal) the seizure was very quick, her eyes went back and forth and her legs were out and shaking for a few seconds, thankfully there's not been
any more. her weight is still good and she seems to be slowly getting back to normal. i doubt it was scurvy, my piggies get high quality pellets and lots of
veg and hay every day. her mobility is still quite bad, 3 of her legs are a bit shaky, her head tilts and she wobbles when she walks. however she can still run
if need be as i found out whilst cleaning her cage lol
shes only 1 and a half, my other piggies are fine and it was almost an instant change. I'll watch her like a hawk but so far so good, i just wish i new what caused it. my other piggles are fine so i doubt is a poision or toxins. im back at the vet next week so ill get a diffrent guy and take it from there. |

Thanks for the additional information. Given what you've told me, I would go with the thought its a neurological issue. I have never seen a seizure like
that in a guinea pig. Scary! Antibiotics makes sense -- if it is an inner ear infection, this should help. It can't hurt. Definitely doesn't sound like
scurvy -- it sounds like she's getting a good diet.
My head-tilt pig got it young; she was a year or so. The vet wasn't sure if it was neurological or infection, although he did lean towards the former. She didn't have seizures, but I came home to find her in the corner, "phasing" (looked like she was watching a game of tennis). She walked or ran in circles, and kept falling over for the first day or two, but other than that, was fine. She never recovered from the head-tilt, but other than that, she was fine. I hope she continues to recover. |

thought i should up date. my piggie is much better now. you wouldn't think anything happened to her, shes practically back to normal now. shes still
slightly leaning to one side but shes much much better
