Heres my question: I took my 8 mo old girl Bianca to the vet yesterday for her "Piggie wellness" exam. I have recently adpoted her. As per many of the advice posts in medical, I had her treated for mites with the Ivermectin as well as antibiotics for possible UTI (there were 2 occasions in the last two weeks where I saw pinkish urine.) Her bahaviour had been normal up to this point and had been eating and drinking plenty. Immediately when I brought her home, and put her back in her enclosure she started wheeking with a very pronounced wheeze. She also wont lay down but instead preferes to stand and freeze. She looks very tense like she cant get comfortable. There have been two instances of this wheezing while wheeking last night I have never seen this behaviour in her prior to her vet visit. Is this possibly a reaction to the Ivermectin? Has anyone heard of leaving the vet and ending up poorly? The antibiotics that she will be taking for the next 14 days is called Baytril , 1ml once a day. I checked on her this morning and still no laying down, she stands a bit taller than usual and kind of stares. This is not normal for her. She was adopted with another girl piggy 8 mo old, Paloma. Who had the same treatment and went to the vet yesterday too with same meds protocol. Paloma is acting normal. Bianca 2.2 lbs Paloma 3.0 lbs They are a pair but not sisters. I am extremely concerned and dont know what to do , since usually there are symptoms and then advice for the vet, but havent seen any posts where going to the vet caused symptoms! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Posts: 4114 07/23/09 01:27 PM Moderator	Wow. Paloma is a big girl. Actually, they're both pretty good size for 8 month olds. Is the wheezing only while she wheeks? You're not hearing any respiratory distress when she's normally moving around? I've heard of pigs do this (I had one that did that), and I've never seen a specific cause that does it. Some pigs just get breathy when they wheek. I know my pigs don't particularly like when I topically apply ivermetin, but the worst they do is shake their heads until it soaks in. Especially since Paloma seems okay, I would not blame this behavior on the ivermectin. If Bianca is uncomfortable, its more likely from the UTI. Was she xrayed to rule out bladder stones? I wouldn't expect it in one so young, but I would about that. Some pigs do not tolerate antibiotics well, especially Baytril. It can cause them to stop eating or get diarrhea. I would weigh her daily, to ensure she's keeping her weight up. If you notice she worsens, or starts to lose weight, I would call back your vet to see about switching her to another antibiotic (bactrim is good for UTIs). If she doesn't start to perk up in the next 24 hours, I would also call back the vet -- usually you see some improvement in symptoms after the first day on antibiotics. Do you happen to know the concentration of the Baytril (mg/ml)? You are right to be concerned. Hopefully she starts feeling better soon, and acting like her old self.

She only wheezes like that when shes wheeking (and from what I can tell only the "begging" type of wheeking) the first time it happened was during veggie time. I never heard her do this prior to the vet visit. She usually has a VERY strong wheek especially when food is involved. The vet acutally guessed at the age of both girls. I rescued them from a girl who rescued them from an abusive situation. Bianca's original cage mate was fed to a snake and Paloma was from a different neglect situation. They became cage mates when I adopted them and after proper introductions, get on quite well. We did not get xrays done, the vet didnt think it was necessary and also said that both girls seemed quite healthy but I insisted on the mite treatment as per the advice on many other medical posts. He said that both also had excellent respiratory funtion. (which is why this wheezing is so concerning ) I belive the Baytril was like 5mg? or .5maybe? I'll have to check when I return home. Could it be just from the excitement of having to go in the carrier and in the car and then having strange hands on her at the vet that has caused stress? Have you ever heard of this kind of reaction happening from stress? Aside from that both girls are eating and drinking normally, despite Bianca's strange behavior. Oh, she wheeked very loudly when she got her injection for the Ivermectin, it broke my heart, but that was the last time of a lould wheek.

Posts: 4114 07/23/09 03:08 PM Moderator	Poor pigs. They're lucky to have found you. I would guess that both are older than 8 months. At 8 months old, they could still be growing a bit. The weights you describe sound like full-grown adult pigs, over a year old. The stress of going to the vet could be a factor. I know my Willow is never happy at the vet, and has wheezed at the vet, only to come home and later be totally fine. Pigs are drama queens, and will tell you that they're being murdered at the least little man-handling. ;-) Shots are no fun, but you'll feel bad about it long after they've forgotten all about it. 5mg/ml could be right. A 1kg pig should get between 2-10mg every 12 hours for baytril, the average being 6.25 mg.

So it sounds like Willow had some wheezing in a stressful situation but it was no big deal in the end. That is reassuring to know!
