Posts: 9 08/15/09 12:51 AM	Tags : None I wanted to give my cavies a special little treat the other night, so I brought one of them (Tina) into the kitchen with me to act as a taste-tester and we put together this little recipe. It sounds really gross... actually it is, I tasted a little... but all three of my pigs went crazy for it!! Before I give it to them again though, I just wanted to make sure the ingredients were safe... so here's the recipe we ended up with: - a lot of dried mint from my garden, crumbled up - a tiny bit of dried parsley - a bit of lemon juice - some dry bran - a few raisins - a tiny bit of raw honey - some organic vegetable broth - a tiny mashed up strawberry mixed it all together in a bowl (it was a paste-y consistency), and then made tiny "rolls" by rolling up a bit of the mixture inside of dark leafy greens until all the mixture was used up. Put the tiny rolls on a little tray for the cavies - and they went crazy over it until every last crumb was gone! I don't see any particular problems off the top of my head, but I'm not exactly a cavy expert either... just doing what I can for my three little rescues, and learning as I go! :) I'd love anyone's review of this snack! .... I wouldn't recommend eating it yourself though, lol. Thankyou!

Posts: 4114 08/15/09 06:55 AM Moderator	I would skip the bran, since grains aren't normally part of a guinea pig's diet. I would be afraid of the lemon juice being to acidic. I've heard mixed reviews on raisins (on whether they can cause problems or not). I would not give my pigs honey - they get enough sugar from the fruit I give them, and would not want to add to that. The rest sounds fine. My pigs love "bitter" things. I've had some pigs with sweet-tooths, but my current pair tend to avoid sweet stuff (like strawberries?!?). Interesting recipe.

Thanks a lot -- I appreciate the education! Good to know about the lemon juice being too acidic, I'll have to pay attention to that. Brings a question to my mind.... so piggies are supposed to get a lot of Vitamin C, so I've learned... the number one food I think of when I think of vitamin C is an orange, but oranges are very acidic (I think). Should the pigs not eat oranges? Just curious. I've been reading different opinions on raisins too from different sources. Problem solved though, personally, because my pigs don't really eat them. They kind of play with them and lick all the good stuff off from the other ingredients and then leave them for me to clean up. This might be just in my head, but I think I've been noticing that the pigs have an okay idea of what they should and should not eat, and tend to avoid the foods that I later find out aren't that great for them. Anyway, thanks again. I have a lot of fun making special treats for them, they get so happy. Just want to make sure I'm not giving them anything that could harm them in the process!

Posts: 4114 08/19/09 05:41 AM Moderator	Oranges, ounce for ounce, doesn't have as much vitamin C as bell peppers. Bell peppers are king of vitamin C for pigs (in my opinion) and are not acidic. There are a variety of charts for what to feed guinea pigs on FAQs - Links to good answers. I know one of them has links to charts of vitamin C content in various foods. There is even an excel spreadsheet that you can plug in weights of various foods, and it will spit back the amount of vitamin C (and the Ca:Ph ratio) for the day's food you've given them.
