Posts: 6 10/13/09 02:48 AM	Tags : None Hi, Didn't think I'd have another questions so soon but I do; I was just watching my two girls (I sexed them myself, after staring at cavy sexing sites forever and learning how) and the slightly bigger pig was picking on her sister-so her sister backed up and left behind an opaque glue. Um...would that be considered boar glue? Am I looking at a male instead of a female? After I saw that I sexed them both again, and I could swear they are both females, but then again, I am not an expert. I will be taking them for a wellness check with my vet soon, but I am obsessing over this now. The bigger one weighed in at 12oz, the smaller one at 10oz. Could it have been a bit of urine? It just seemed too thick and strange colored for urine..just wondering if anyone has ever seen this. I apologize if this is a stupid question, I am new to this.

Posts: 4114 10/13/09 08:06 AM Moderator	Its possible that its her vaginal plug. Another person on this board recently posted a picture of it. They lose it when they go into heat, and then they re-grow this plug during the rest of their cycle (they cycle ever 15-17 days). I don't have a chance to go searching for the post right now, but if you search for "plug" in the medical forum, I'm sure you'll come across it -- and then you can compare it to what you found in your cage. I've never had boars... so I'm not personally familiar with what boar glue looks like. Although, I would suspect if it was boar glue, he'd had left it on the female, not just left it behind on the bedding.

Posts: 6 10/13/09 12:54 PM	Thanks Pooksied-I am seriously obsessed with this sexing thing, I feel so bad because they wriggle so much when I am checking them but I want to make triple sure that I know what gender I am working with here. I will look at those pictures when I get home (my coworkers might not appreciate me viewing that here), I hadn't thought of that being what it was. Is that something they do in response to someone harrassing them, or was it purely random? Either way, I am almost 100% sure that whatever they are, they are both of the same gender. Their parts look the exact same. They came from a litter of 4, and I sexed all of them. I thought the girls that I got were boys at first, until I compared them to the last two, and then it seemed rather obvious that they were girls in comparison. Now I am doubting myself. The home that I got them from said they were about 6 weeks old, but at 10 and 12 oz respectively, that seems a little old, don't you think? I guess I will confirm with my vet and try not to worry in the meantime. As they both seem to be at least 21 days old, they are on pregnancy watch as well, because she had them in with all their siblings and their dad :/.

This is the post with the photo I told you about: This came out of someone.... 10-12 oz is about 310grams, which according to my charts, puts them a little over 1 month old. Putting them on pregnancy watch is not a bad thing, regardless, but depending on how long you've had them, its fairly unlikely they're pregnant. They'd be on the small side for 6 weeks old, but that's not too far out.

Posts: 6 10/14/09 11:56 AM	It was much more liquidy and opaque than that photo..perhaps it was a bit of urine with calcium in it? I will try and get a photo of their bits, they are so wriggley but are getting more and more friendly each day. They are a little tired of me prodding around down there, poor things. I guesstimated at about 4 weeks old too after looking at the weight charts, 6 weeks just seemed a little much. I know pregnancy is unlikely (thankfully) but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I have only had them since Saturday, which means that they were with their sibilings and mom and dad for at least 3 weeks. On another note, they are quick learners; they now know I am The Food Lady, so each time I walk into the kitchen and/or start rustling a bag, they go nuts. It makes us smile.
